SANSAD‐ the Debating society of IILM organized the Seventh Vivekananda Memorial
Debate 2007 on December 15th to 16th, 2007. |

Vivekananda Memorial Debate is one of the India’s most respected and sought after
debating grounds for the debaters from prestigious education institutions in India.
Teams from across the country compete for the VMD Trophy every year. Vivekananda
Memorial Debate is a platform for cross pollination of ideas and views related not only
to management and the economy but also to burning socio‐political issues. The two
days of VMD at IILM campus were marked with fervor and enthusiasm. |

This year twelve teams from prestigious colleges including IIM‐Ahmedabad, IIMBangalore,
Narsee Monjee, XLRI, Sri Venkateswar, MICA, SRCC and others participated
in the preliminary rounds. |

After a close neck‐to‐neck fight 7 teams were short‐listed for the semi‐final and 4 out of
those moved to the final round organized on Sunday morning at the IILM campus. In the
semi‐finals the team debated on, “Coalition politics” and relevant debate ensued on the
nature, impact and fall‐out of coalition politics. Various forms of government, exemplary
coalition governments of Nordic countries and the specifics of the ‘Indian case’ were
brought to light during an engrossing semi‐final round.

IIM Bangalore, Narsee Monjee, SRCC and Sri Venkateswara College made it to the final
round of VMD. They debated on “inclusive growth as a chimera”. The participants did
full justice to an extremely relevant topic and demonstrated acumen and expertise in
exploring the role of policy makers, business and the common citizen in ensuring all
round development of the Indian economy. An extremely competent panel of
adjudicators comprising academicians, government officials and UNDP personnel had a
tough time deciding on the winners. |

The first position and prize money worth Rs 50,000 was bagged by Sri Venkateswara
College, ollowed by IIM Bangalore at a close second. The runners up carried back the
silver medal and prize money worth Rs 20,000. A ‘best speaker’ and ‘best interjector’
award was also given away. |

The organizing team of IILM Sansad Debating Society was complimented by participants
and audience alike for the flawless organization of the event. The event was attended by Mr. Anil Rai with distinguished professors at IILM: Prof. B. Bhattacharya, Prof. Sapna Popli and Dr. Badal Mukherji. The entire program was
student –driven and proved to be a huge learning in managerial organization for all
concerned. |
