IILM I-Fest 2009 a runaway success with huge participation from within and outside the institute

IILM I-Fest 2009 concluded on a high note on the 20th December 2009. The event was a marvellous display of talent and teamwork while being loads of fun. Spread across two campuses we bring you an account here.

Lodhi Road Campus:

Creativity isn’t limited to a select few. That’s precisely what I-FEST, held at IILM, Lodhi Road, demonstrated in ample measure. This event unleashed the true potential of originality of young would-be managers coming from various educational institutions. I-FEST was a runaway success not just because the students participating in it were pro-active, but also because all the individual events of the Fest ensured that their talent was judged in an unbiased manner.

The festival included 10 zestful individual competitions and was flagged off with Ad-Mad (an advertising-based competition) which tested the participants in an all-inclusive manner. The initial rounds were about identifying popular brand logos; then there was a session on poster-making and, finally, the participants were asked to present an ad on a theme that was given on the spot.

The highlight of Ad-Mad was the enigmatic and charming Casio Player Sunny Sachdeva, from the Under-Graduate Business School of IILM, Lodhi Road, who mesmerized all with popular Bollywood tunes.
Team 1 from IILM, Lodhi Road was declared the winner. Team members included Prashant Kala and Varun Sachdeva. IGSM Post Graduate College was declared the runners up.
What followed was broadcast work culture. As thrilling as the name suggests, it focused on the creative community and got them actively involved in articulating and advocating ideas. The competition was based on short documentary montages and the jury left no stone unturned to test the abilities of the students.

With challenging themes like human resource and organizational behavior, all the 7 teams participating in the event proved their metal. There were 2 teams from Asian Business School and the ICFAI- Noida and the rest were from IILM, Lodhi Road.

The colorful T-Shirt painting competition also showed breathtaking and mind-bending levels of creativity in painting the iconic Mahatma Gandhiji. Colors ran riot depicting all seasons of Gandhiji’s life through brushstrokes.

And if this wasn’t all, the management quiz was also marked by high levels of thinking on the spot. With teams coming from the IIT- New Delhi and Delhi School of Economics, this event was a grand success. All the participating students showed a keen bent of mind towards general knowledge and world affairs. Delhi School won the first prize followed by students from Under-Graduate Business School, IILM, Lodhi Road.

What’s life without fashion, especially when you are at IILM? Who says college is all about studies? Students set the stage on fire at the corporate walk, another thrilling part of the I-FEST. The first name of fashion, designer Rohit Bal, judged the participants, our event. IILM Gurgaon won the first prize by a gripping margin of just one mark.

The Food Fest and Basket Ball League proved to be another feather in our cap. With Thai, Italian, Malaysian and Japanese cuisines coming under one roof, it sure had to be a whole lot of fun.

And the basketball match between IILM, Lodhi Road and 7 other colleges was enthralling to the core with the final round taking place between IILM and Jamia Millia Islamia College. It was a nerve wracking experience and our college won the match with a thin margin.

The finale of the I-FEST was the 9thVivekanada Memorial Debate, a platform for India’s most prestigious debating teams. This competition attracted students from highly reputable colleges like IIT Mumbai, IIM Calcutta, Shri Ram College of Commerce and Sri Venkateshwara College.

The dream trophy for the competition went to Shikhar Singh and Ajitesh Kir of St.Stephen’s College. Gaurav and Teena of IIFT were awarded the second position. The award for best interjector was given to Aamir Zeb, from IIT, Delhi.

All in all, I-Fest displayed a fabulous convergence of talent, skills and enthusiasm from all the participating students and went to show that the youth of today, really, is the true asset for our country.

Gurgaon Campus:

Innovation personified was the motto of I-FEST, an annual affair by the IILM institute of higher education, held in December 2009 at the Gurgaon Campus. I-Fest was flagged off by Mr. Rajeev Sharma, CEO of Adani Energy, by inspiring participants with his words of wisdom. Showing how bright the future can be with the right set of skills and motivation, his oration was highly appreciated by the audience members.

The pilot event of the I-Fest was ‘Halla Bol’ which generated a lot of hype and enthusiasm from students. Being true to its name, Halla Bol was a winner through and through. Based on the concept of street play, it aimed to provide students with an inviting platform to showcase their talent. Four teams participated and issues were raised on socially challenging themes like being the fairer sex in a male dominated society and the laidback attitude of Indians. Bringing up situations depicting eve-teasing and domestic violence, all the teams presented the themes in a convincing manner, amid cheer and applause. Judged by Ms. Priyamvada Taneja, Guidance Counselor of the British High Commission, it ensured extempore and free-spirited ideas for all the participants.

The IILM Undergraduate Business School got the first prize on the basis of dialogue delivery and body language. Shahid Bhagat Singh College, DU won the 2ndprize.

Next in line for the I-Fest was another thrilling extravaganza called ‘Rialto Boulevard’. As interesting as the name suggests, it was based on Point of Purchase. Imbibing the concepts of Marketing and selling, it was a big crowd puller. A major attraction in the event were brands like Pizza Hut, Café Coffee Day and Slice of Italy. The aim of participants was to pull crowds to their respective stalls by using innovative ideas and appealing decorations. The final winners were Pizza Hut and Café Coffee Day from IILM, Gurgaon.

Everyone loves to play with colors. This went to show in the next calling of I-Fest called ‘Face Painting’. Organized by the Environment club of IILM, it was based on global issues and ensured freedom of expression. Each team had two members and one of them painted the face of another. With the duration of one and half hours, participants were encouraged to deliver their best without time restrictions. The members of the jury were highly motivating while the audience left no stone unturned to provide support and encouragement of participants. No less than a reality TV show, the competition saw a tie between two teams and after another round of judgment, the final result was declared. Ms. Sakshi Suri and Ms. Priyanka won the competition with a nerve winding difference of just 1 mark.

This was followed by the ‘Group Dance Competition’. Consisting of participants from various Delhi University colleges like Daulat Ram, DCAC and Sri Venkateshwara, it showed the dancing skills of participants who were no less than professional choreographers. The performances reflected a combination of dance forms like Jazz, Funk, Contemporary and Hip-hop. First prize was won by Maitreyi College while the second went to Sri Venkateshwara College.

Another highlight of the I-FEST was ‘Lock Stock and Barrell’. It successfully depicted a Virtual stock exchange with all the zest and excitement intact. Teams were given a case study in the beginning and based on the news flashed on the screen, they had to buy and sell shares, just like being in a realistic Stock exchange. The team having the maximum cash in the end won the prize. The event saw participation from colleges like Delhi School Of Economics, FMS, IIFT and IILM Greater Noida.

Next in line was ‘Tech Mania’. Organized by the IT club of IILM, the competition aimed at applauding the geniuses who have an inherent liking and bent of mind towards technology and computer applications. The first round was the Selection Round based on Word Games and Need for Speed game. The second round included a Wild Card Entry from the audience while the final round was an Audio-Visual round. In and all, there were 68 registrations for the event and five teams were selected for the final round. The prize was jointly won by IBMR, Gurgaon and IILM, Greater Noida.

The I-FEST ended with an enthralling performance by children from NGO Arushi. Dancing to the notes of ‘Jai Ho’ from Slum dog Millionaire, these little wonders left the audience spell bound with their perfection in choreography and expressions. Arushi, which houses 52 girls, is the fifth shelter home for children opened by Delhi Based Trust called Salaam Baalak. It aims at providing safe and secure shelter to street children and aims at developing their education. The environment club of IILM works jointly with this trust to ensure full support for their cause.

In and all, I-FEST was an amazing experience for students and faculty alike and ended with everyone craving for more.

IILM-UBS celebrates the success of its partnership with the University of Bradford at its 11th Annual Convocation Ceremony

The eleventh annual convocation ceremony of IILM-Undergraduate Business School -- a leading management institute based in New Delhi, India -- was held on November 3, 2009. As a leader in management education, IILM's dignified graduation ceremony is a unique opportunity for its students. This undergraduate programme began in 1996 in partnership with the University of Bradford, UK – a trendsetting joint venture that took advantage of the opening up of the Indian economy to economic reforms since 1991. More than 850 students have so far been awarded bachelor degrees in business administration, all of whom have been placed comfortably in a booming economy that is considered one of the future growth engines of the world economy. This year IILM UBS celebrates the success of its 11th cohort of graduating students at their joint degree Convocation in November when 87 students received their degrees at this critical juncture of a global economic crisis.

Prof Arthur Francis, Dean, School of Management, University of Bradford, who attended all the previous convocations, delivered the Graduation Address after the outgoing batch received their certificates and awards. According to Prof Francis, the growth of IILM and the UBS programme mirrors the deep-going transformations in India’s economy. "My first visit was eight years after India’s economic liberalization in 1991. We now know that this set India decisively on its current pathway of fast economic growth…. But year after year I have seen for myself … the modernisation of the capital city – the opening of the Delhi Metro, road-building with many expressways and overpasses, the development of Gurgaon, the growth of IILM itself."

India’s growth rate of 7-8 per cent a year meant that over 11 years its gross domestic product has more than doubled. Prof Francis argued that this is "excellent news for the middle class, for merchants, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. It is even better news for the millions who were poor and who have been lifted out of poverty and illiteracy by this economic growth. And this economic growth has come about through the application, at the level of the economy, of economic theory taught in universities and business schools, and at the level of the firm by the application of the ideas you have taught on your degree programme at IILM."

In the context of the global financial crisis, Prof Francis forcefully urged the outgoing graduates to keep in mind 3 Ms: might, mind and morals. Which approach is right? Might, mind, or morality? Of course, the answer has to be all of them. “You are entering the world of the mighty and your political skills will be forever invaluable to you. We rely on you to exercise those political skills with the highest levels of morality. And do continue to use your minds at the highest possible level, to make sure you take the right technical decisions to avoid further financial and other crises, to ensure a sustainable future for us all, and to maintain a level of economic growth that continues to add to the world’s health, wealth and wisdom”, he concluded.

PGP Students of IILM Institute for Higher Education organized a rural fair, Gram-Utthan 09 at Kotputli in Rajasthan on 10th & 11th October, 2009

IILM students at the Lodhi Road campus organized a rural fair named Gramuthaan’09 at Kotputli in Rajasthan on 10th October ’09.
The rural fair was initiated with a three-fold objective. First, to sensitize students with buying behavior of rural community. Second, to sell some company sponsored products and third, to spread awareness on social issues like girl education and insurance. Students designed a brochure and approached companies to participate in the rural fair. Five companies which we tied up with were ITC, Surya Bulbs , Berian pipes, Sunyog Aloe vera juice and Bikanerwale. Based on the company brief, games and questionnaires were designed and administered in their language. The participants responded openly and with interest.
To attract the crowd, games like Rassa Kassi, Logo- Mehndi, Masti Ki Pathsala , Yaadash etc were designed and while the 'unheard of' game Tambola was taught and played . Each game was accompanied with research questions. Students also staged a Nukkad Natak titled ‘Jeevan Ke Saath and Jeevan Ke baad Bhi’, imparting education on Health Insurance which the audience was unaware of. A movie on girl education by NCERT was also screened. A lucky draw was organized at the end of the event .
All these activities and the food stalls put together with a great response in terms of numbers (a footfall of 500 people) made it a unique learning experience both for students as well as the crowd which was keen to know when would the event be repeated.

Speech of Prof.B.Bhattacharyya delivered at the Third Convocation Ceremony for PGP (07-09) held on 23rd. May 08.

Distinguished Chief Guest this afternoon, Dr. E. Sreedharan, Members of the Board of Governors, Invitees including Parents of our students, colleagues and lastly but most importantly, the outgoing PGDM batch of students

On behalf of the IILM Institute for Higher Education, it is my privilege to welcome you all to its 3rd Annual Convocation. For the outgoing students, the convocation is characterized by sheer joy but also tinged with a little shade of nostalgia. The joy is for successful completion of a difficult rigorous academic programme, the thrill of being at the threshold of a professional career

The nostalgia is for the glorious days in the campus which will never come back, the friendships made and sometimes lost - the days of day-dreaming finally over

For us too, this is a day of satisfaction, sense of doing the best that one can do in terms of imparting education, contributing, howsoever insignificant it might be, to nation building by developing a young cadre of professionals with right perspectives and ethical values.

Bertolt Brecht, the famous 20th century dramatist once observed and I quote “unhappy the land that is in need of heroes.” Unquote.

But in India today, we are in need of leaders, of role models who have proven their worth by doing, not by preaching.

We have one such leader amongst us today Dr. E. Sreedharan. I do not think he needs any introduction to this audience but still it will be proper to highlight few facts of his illustrious carrier, more to gratify ourselves, than him.

Dr. Sreedharan is currently Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. He was born in 1932 in a remote village in Kerala, joined the elite Indian Railway Service of Engineers. He had a distinguished career spanning 36 years in the Indian Railways, joining as an Assistant Engineer (1954) and retiring (1990) as Member Engineering, Railway Board and ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India.

After his retirement from the Indian Railways in 1990, he was in-charge of the prestigious 760 kms long Konkan Railway connecting Mumbai to Mangalore which he completed within an incredibly short period of 7 years. After completing Konkan Railway, by end of 1997, Dr. Sreedharan was entrusted with the difficult and complex Delhi Metro Project.

Following the success of Delhi Metro, Dr. Sreedharan has been spearheading efforts to provide Metro systems in other State capitals. In the process, metros have been planned for Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Kochi.

Dr. Sreedharan is a recipient of many prestigious awards from the Government and professional bodies in India and abroad, including the National Award of “Padma Shri” in 2001 and “Padma Vibhushan” 2008.

Other awards he has received is so numerous that if I go enumerating all of them, it would take longer time than possibly his convocation address. Therefore, with these few words, I welcome him to IILM and look forward to his inspiring address.

It is also my duty to thank all the stakeholders of IILM who have ungrudgingly extended their hands to make the program a success. Especially crucial is the support of the firms and institutions which had taken our students for their internships and final placements. My thanks are also due to a large number of distinguished guest faculty, drawn from industry and academia for their contribution.

IILM Institute for Higher Education Rated as A++ Category B-School by Business India

It is of great pride and joy for all of us here at IILM to have been accorded the status of an A++ category B-School by Business India in its latest survey to ascertain the top business schools in the country. It is another year in succession that we have been placed in the top league of business schools in India and it is testimony to IILM’s constant endeavor towards providing the finest business education there is.

There are many ingredients which go into the making of a top-of-the-line business school. Some of which are:

   - Brand value and market positioning (includes various sub categories from placement performance to connectivity with      overseas universities)

   - Intellectual capital (Large number of quality aspects including e-learning program to exchange faculty)

   - Learning ambience (Infrastructure, campus size, connectivity and many more)

   - Growth (Includes factors like increase in batch strength and IT and library investments)

Needless to say, IILM scored very highly in each of the above as well as overall, leading to an inclusion in the top league.

How does the ranking make a difference to your life?

We believe the answer to this question for us as management students is fairly obvious. Being touted as an A++ level institute in a respected, widely read and referred to publication not only leads to better placements through brand visibility, but also attracts the best talent pool of intellectual capital to the institute, be it students, or faculty, besides a host of other benefits.

So what next?

Next, we continue to raise the bar by venturing into newer initiatives such as IILM centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This is where we become a cradle for new and exciting ventures by brilliant people and forward integrate ourselves into the corporate world we have so long been providing able and young managers with.

So here’s hoping that we continue to grow and excel in the same illustrious way we have done, and prove ourselves as a force to reckon with in the world of business education for many years to come.
