As a part of our endeavour to invite distinguished speakers to share their wisdom and experience with us, we take great pleasure in inviting you to a lecture on Family Owned Businesses by Prof William H Alexander, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
In his long association with the Wharton School, he has administered the Wharton Family Controlled Corporation Program. In addition, he has served on numerous boards, including Herr Foods, Hershey Foods Corporation, Penn National Mutual Insurance Company, and Highmark Blue Shield. He was formerly the Managing Director of the Snider Entrepreneurial Research Center. Prof . Alexander holds an undergraduate degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been widely recognized for his contribution in areas of Education, Business and Public Service.
Family-owned businesses play a crucial role in the economy of most countries. Worldwide, family-managed businesses employ half the world’s workforce and generate over 50% of the world’s GDP While Family owned companies are often strong competitors; they have vulnerabilities that need to be managed. Only a third of the family managed companies pass successfully from the founder generation into the second generation, and half pass from second generation to the third. The lecture would focus on the challenges and opportunities faced by family owned businesses like the importance of empowerment of family members in family businesses and how to successfully transfer businesses from one generation to another.
