FAQ'S

What is the difference between counselling and psychiatry?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are trained to diagnose and treat the illnesses of the brain or mental disorders. Whereas psychotherapist and counsellor deal with the emotional instabilities and coping skills. Psychotherapy has a three pronged approach to provide preventive counselling, promotive counselling and crisis intervention. They do not prescribe medicines.

Counselling Services

This may include but not limited to:

  • Relationship problems – family & friends, colleagues, commitment, jealousy, abuse
  • Family related – homesickness, separation, parenting,
  • Lack of confidence – feeling worried, judged, feel can never do well enough, fear of failure
  • Depression – feeling lonely, helpless, lost, unwanted, unloved, tearful
  • Disruptive behaviour – binge eating, not eating, sleep disorder, drug / alcohol abuse
  • Fear of exams – panic attacks, extreme stressful, nervous, anxiety attack
  • Bereavement of loved one
  • Handling Emotions
  • Coping with difficult life situations

What is Group Counselling?

Group counselling is often the best way to work on problems generally faced by students. A group gives you an opportunity to be in contact with a few of your own age  individuals,  who are not a part of your everyday life, and so can give you a more useful and objective feedback. Group counselling works better especially when the problems deal with issues about your relationship with other people. The counsellor role is that of a facilitator who ensures smooth and fair running of the group.

Doesn't asking for counselling mean admitting failure?

Paradoxically it can be seen as a matter of strength to ask for counselling. Many people think that they are being strong in not seeking help whereas in fact those who can admit to their difficulties could be considered the strong ones. Asking for counselling often mean you have taken the first difficult step on the road to resolving the problem.

Why should you take the psychometric test?

Our psychometric testing centre offers a variety of assessment tools to do a relevant need assessment for you and your mentor. It helps you to identify areas which need improvement for you to work on during your two / three year stay at the institute.

The department offers a range of psychometric test like personality test, interest inventory, attitude scale, anxiety and motivation and other tests/scale as per the need of the students. These test help the students get a baseline of the areas which needs to be further developed. Each student will have the privilege to have one to one discussion with a qualified and trained professional.

Why should there be mentoring when we already have counselling services?

Mentoring is for the holistic development of the students whereas counselling is for helping the students resolve any problem / conflict they may be facing.

Mentoring

  • Each student will be assigned a mentor for his/her stay at the institute.
  • The mentor will give guidance and direction in a FIRM, FAIR & FRIENDLY way.
  • Your mentor will help you in your holistic development along with motivating you to achieve academic excellence.
  • Mentor will also assist you in any other area via referral system.

Personality Development Program (PDP)

Base on the industry feedback personality development program has been designed to enable the students enhance their soft skills.
